_Pet News From Jeanine Dunn

The Holiday Season and Your Dog

This festive time of year tends to be quite hectic. As we check off all of our to-do lists the question may come up, "What about my dog?"

Visiting Friends for the Holiday:  With Fido or without Fido?
Not every hostess, friend, Grandmother or  favorite uncle -- or pet for that matter --  can deal with a holiday visit.

A: Many animals prefer a familiar location. They might not enjoy playing with your sister's pet, your friend's cat or boyfriend's German Shepherd.
Remember, even when wearing their new Christmas sweater, they don't have a clue it's a festive time of the year.

B: Although we all think our dogs are perfect...take stock. If your dog has accidents when nervous, begs, or howls at all hours of the night,
this is a good reason to leave him home.  If you don't have another family member to dog-sit, look for a good kennel in your area.
Ask for recommendations and visit the kennel or day care facility you have in mind.

Preparing for a visit:
If you bring your pet along for a trip here are a few practical tips.

A:  Hopefully, your pal is trained to be a good canine citizen and a good guest.

B: Check with your host in advance and find out how the family feels about animals. Are any children of the house afraid of dogs? If
they have pets of their own, how do their animals get along with others?

C: Travel with your dog or cat crated in the car. There are a lot of people on the road and we want everyone safe in our vehicles.

D: Have reliable identification on your pet (look into a tattoo and microchip).

E: Does your pet travel well? Be it planes or cars, if your pet needs something for motion sickness talk to your vet.

Holiday items around the house!

All that glitter, all that food... Fido is bewitched!
Be careful leaving items around the house that your dog can get into. Certainly if you have a puppy you still want to keep the house
puppy proof. One way would be to keep your puppy out of the room where a tree, gifts and holiday food might be.
I suggest a crate where your puppy can be safe when you can't watch the little one.

Decorations can pose health issues. Dogs may chew at electrical wires and ribbons can get caught in their throat. Certain plants
like mistletoe, are dangerous to dogs. We talked about candy in our first article so be sure to keep chocolate off the table when you can't attend to your
pet.  Also watch out for those turkey bones which can be left on the kitchen counter or for those dogs who love getting into the trash!

It's a fun time of year!

Make this time of year great for the entire family and that includes your pets. Be sure you're giving them the attention
they are accustomed to - like a walk in the park, a game of catch and special time with you and the family in the evening.
Keep up any training that you have started, just 5 minutes a day will keep your dog mentally active and happy.

Hope to see everyone on December 18th  at 10 am for the Roe Jan Park, Dog Run Winter WAG!

Happy Holidays,
Jeanine Dunn

AGILITY 101 PROGRAM A HUGE SUCCESS!!

Agility 101...The Route 22 Dog Run was set up ready to go...
Jeanine Dunn, the instructor and trainer provided a tunnel, see-saw and poles . The crowd, yes crowd, gathered at 10AM, August 21st,  in the small dog run
while Jeanine's dog went thru the maneuvers....

All of the dog guests were eager to try their skills as well...with some coaxing and treats... some liked the tunnel and some preferred the jump,
while some mastered the board....all had a great time. Many new friends too.

Jeanine will be writing a column about dogs in our newsletter beginning next month and will announce a schedule of Agility 101 classes at the park.
Please keep the Sunday 10AM time slot open to bring your dog to the Dog Run for a play and social time.
Below is a slideshow from the fabulous event!!

OLD ROUTE 22 DOG RUN
 at ROELIFF JANSEN PARK

Please visit The Old Route 22 Community Dog Run at Roeliff Jansen Park (Columbia County's newest [and only] community dog run!!Through the generosity of community dog lovers, and through the energy and support of the Roeliff Jansen Park Steering Committee, volunteers, and donors, it has come to be!

 WOOF!!I
A few details about the dog run:

1 - Location -It is located south of the park entrance, parallel to Route 22...almost across from the new library.
2 - Parking -all visitors to the park and the dog run must use the main parking lot at the park entrance area.
3 - Water - we hope eventually to be able to offer running water for the dog run but it is not ready as yet ...
so be sure to bring water for your dog.
4 - Small Friends Area - we have constructed a separate area at the front of the run for small dogs and puppies.
Dogs over 25 pounds are not permitted to use the area.
5 - Poop Policy - Two poop stations are provided in the dog run and one in the main parking lot. It is essential that visitors pick up after their dogs and deposit waste in the receptacles. Poop trash bags will be provided while they last...it is always good to have a back up.
6 - Shade...there is lots of wonderful shade and we have provided a few sitting areas.
7 - Reminder/Leashes - Dogs must be on the leash outside the dog run at all times.
8 - Gates...there are double gates to get into the dog run...be sure to always to close the gates behind you.
9 - Volunteer Dog Run - This is a volunteer dog run and help in any way would be most appreciated, including help with poop bag removal. To become a volunteer write to us roejanpark@gmail.com
If WE ALL cooperate, we will ENJOY a healthy, safe environment.
Woof!
